Isaiah 55:1

הוֹי כָּל צָמֵא לְכוּ לַמַּיִם וַאֲשֶׁר אֵין לוֹ כָּסֶף שִׁבְרוּ וֶאֱכֹלוּ וּלְכוּ בְּלוֹא כֶסֶף וּבְלוֹא מְחִיר וְחָלָב׃
Hey, all the thirsty, come to the water, those who have no money come, buy, eat and come buy wine and milk without money and without price

John 7:37-39

37 Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν, λέγων, Ἐάν τις διψᾷ, ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω.
37 In the last day, the great day, of the feast, Jesus had risen and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty let him come to me and drink.

38 Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ, καθὼς εἴπεν ἡ γραφή, ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος.
38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from his bosom.

39 Tοῦτο δὲ εἴπεν περὶ τοῦ πνεύματος οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύοντες εἰς αὐτόν- οὔπω γὰρ ἦν πνεῦμα ἅγιον, ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη.
39 He said this about the spirit that believers in him would receive: for the holy spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

John 4, 1-42 Jesus and the Samaritan woman

1 Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω ὁ κύριος ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει ἢ Ἰωάννης-
1 When, therefore, the Lord (Jesus) knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John –

2 καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν, ἀλλ’ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ-
2 in truth, Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples –

3 ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν, καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν.
3 he left Judea and went to Galilee.

4 Ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας.
4 It was necessary for him, then, to go through Samaria.

5 Ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχάρ, πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ὃ ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ-
5 He arrives, then, at a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land Jacob had given to Joseph, his son:

6 ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πηγὴ τοῦ Ἰακώβ. Ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς κεκοπιακὼς ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας ἐκαθέζετο οὕτως ἐπὶ τῇ πηγῇ. Ὥρα ἦν ὡσεὶ ἕκτη.
6 there was Jacob’s spring. So Jesus, having grown tired from the journey, sat down by the spring. The hour was about the sixth.

The sixth hour was counted from sunrise, so it was around noon. This is emphasized, not only because of the heat of midday, but also because it is at the same sixth hour that Jesus is to be crucified. And what he is now announcing to the Samaritan woman will be fulfilled on the cross: from my side will flow rivers of living water (John 7:38), I will give you water from which you will thirst no more (John 4:14), come to the waters, even he who has no money (Isaiah 55:1). All these words of Jesus announce the water that will flow from his pierced side on the cross, a sign of God’s love for mankind, who went so far as to give his own life, so that mankind could receive the gift of his love, his for-giveness, this eternal gift renewed.

7 Ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ- λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Δός μοι πιεῖν.
7 Arrives a woman from Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, “Give me a drink.”

8 Οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν.
8 For his disciples had gone to the city to buy food.

9 Λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ Σαμαρεῖτις, Πῶς σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὢν παρ’ ἐμοῦ πιεῖν αἰτεῖς, οὔσης γυναικὸς Σαμαρείτιδος;- Οὐ γὰρ συγχρῶνται Ἰουδαῖοι Σαμαρείταις.
9 So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink? for Jews don’t interact with Samaritans.

10 Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἴπεν αὐτῇ, Εἰ ᾒδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ λέγων σοι, Δός μοι πιεῖν, σὺ ἂν ᾒτησας αὐτόν, καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν.
10 Jesus replied and said to her, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

11 Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή, Κύριε, οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις, καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ- πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν;
11 The woman said to him, “Lord, you don’t even have a bucket and the well is deep: where, then, can you get the living water from?”

12 Μὴ σὺ μείζων εἴ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ, ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν, καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ;
12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself and his sons and his flocks?”

13 Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἴπεν αὐτῇ, Πᾶς ὁ πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου, διψήσει πάλιν-
13 Jesus replied and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again ;

14 ὃς δ’ ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ, οὐ μὴ διψήσῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα- ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ ὃ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν πηγὴ αὐτῷ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
14 But let any man drink of the water that I will give him, and he shall not thirst for ever: and moreover the water that I will give him shall become in him a spring of life springing up unto everlasting life.

15 Λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή, Κύριε, δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ, ἵνα μὴ διψῶ, μηδὲ ἔρχομαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν.
15 The woman said to him, “Lord, give me this water, so that I may no longer be thirsty and come here to draw water.

16Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ὕπαγε, φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σοῦ, καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε.
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.”

17 Ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἴπεν, Οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα. Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Καλῶς εἴπας ὅτι Ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω-
17 The woman replied and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You spoke well, ‘I have no husband :

18 πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες, καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ- τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας.
18 indeed, you have had five husbands and now the one you have is not your husband: what you said is true.”

19 Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή, Κύριε, θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἴ σύ.
19 The woman said to him, “Lord, I see that you are a prophet.

20 Οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν- καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος ὅπου δεῖ προσκυνεῖν.
20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain here, and you [Jewish people] say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.

21 Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Γύναι, πίστευσόν μοι, ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα, ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ πατρί.
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me: the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

22 Ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε- ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν- ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν.
22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

23 Ἀλλ’ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν, ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ- καὶ γὰρ ὁ πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν.
23 But the hour is coming, and now it is, when the true worshippers will worship the father in spirit and truth: for the father seeks those who worship him in this way.

24 Πνεῦμα ὁ θεός- καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν, ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν.
24 God is spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and truth.

25 Λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή, Οἴδα ὅτι Μεσίας ἔρχεται- ὁ λεγόμενος χριστός- ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος, ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν πάντα.
25 The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming – he who is called Christ – and when he will come, he will teach us everything.

26 Λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι.
26 Jesus said to him, “I am, the one who speaks to you.”

It should be noted in Jesus’ reply that he does not say, “I am the one,” but just “I, I am.” Presumably, not only does he claim to be the Messiah, but he also claims to be God. Indeed, God, who spoke to Moses, the word of God, said (Exodus 3:14): “I am the one who I am.” And elsewhere in the Gospel, Jesus affirms: “I am”. (John 8:58) The Messiah is not just a prophet, but the very word of God made flesh, as John’s Gospel clearly states at the beginning (John 1:14). The word Messiah means “the anointed one” in Hebrew, and is translated into Greek as Christos from the verb khríō (χρίω) to anoint. The image of the oil as a subtle material that penetrates skin and even stone tells us that the Messiah is the one who is filled with the spirit of God, but not as a prophet is. Rather, as a son who shares the father’s nature, who is the father’s image. Thus, the Messiah is announced by the prophet Isaiah 42:1, and the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke remind us of this when they relate the words of God heard in the cloud by the apostles on Mount Tabor (Matthew 17:5; Mark 9; Luke 9:35): “This is my son, the beloved in whom I am well pleased.” The Messiah manifests to mankind the fullness of God’s love that dwells in him. So, as God himself, he can also proclaim: “I am” as God revealed to Moses.

27 Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐθαύμασαν ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει- οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἴπεν, Tί ζητεῖς; ἤ, Tί λαλεῖς μετ’ αὐτῆς;
27 And upon this came his disciples and were astonished because he was talking with a woman: yet none said, “What are you looking for?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς ἡ γυνή, καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις,
28 The woman, then, left her pitcher and went to the city and said to the men:

29 Δεῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἴπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησα- μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός;
29 “Come, see a man who has told me all that I have done: unless this is not Christ?”

30 Ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν.
30 They came out of the city and went toward him.

31 Ἐν δὲ τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταί, λέγοντες, Ῥαββί, φάγε.
31 Meanwhile the disciples asked him, “Rabbi [master], eat.”

32 Ὁ δὲ εἴπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε.
32 Then he said to them, “I have a food that you do not know.”

33 Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους, Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν;
33 Then the disciples said to one another, “Unless someone has brought him something to eat?”

34 Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν, ἵνα ποιῶ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με, καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον.
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is that I do the will of the One who sent me and carry out his work.

35 Οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν, καὶ ὁ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται; Ἰδού, λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν, καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας, ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμὸν ἤδη.
35 Do you not say, “There are still four months and then comes the harvest?” Behold, I say to you, “Lift up your eyes and behold the fields: they are already white for harvest.

36 Καὶ ὁ θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει, καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον- ἵνα καὶ ὁ σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ ὁ θερίζων.
36 And the reaper receives a reward and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the sower may rejoice together with the reaper.

37 Ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ ὁ λόγος ἐστὶν ὁ ἀληθινός, ὅτι Ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ σπείρων, καὶ ἄλλος ὁ θερίζων.
37 Indeed, in this is true the saying, “One is the sower and another the reaper. “

38 Ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν ὃ οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε- ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασιν, καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε.
38 I sent you to reap that which cost you no effort: to others it has cost effort and you, you entered into their effort [receiving the benefits of it].

39 Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαρειτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι Εἴπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησα.
39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I have done.”

40 Ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρεῖται, ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρ’ αὐτοῖς- καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας.
40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them: and he stayed there two days.

41 Καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ,
41 And many more believed because of his own word [to them]

42 τῇ τε γυναικὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Οὐκέτι διὰ τὴν σὴν λαλιὰν πιστεύομεν- αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν, καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου, ὁ χριστός.
42 and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your saying: indeed, we have heard him and we know that this one is truly the savior of the world, the Christ.
